Recorder Madness!

Today is a big day for Grade 4 students at Buchanan! They are beginning to play the recorder! Because Grade 5 students have already been playing for 1 year, they are proving to be excellent teachers! Each Grade 5 student has been paired up with a Grade 4 student and has taught them the following:

1. How to hold the recorder
2. How to blow gently
3. How to play B, A and G
4. How to play Hot Cross Buns

They did a great job!

The Journey of the Aboriginal Flute - Day 1

This is going to be an exciting year at Buchanan! All students in Kindergarten to Grade 5 are going to be making their very own Aboriginal flute! Today some of the grade 4's and 5's from room 13 began the process by drilling the finger holes! This is a very tedious procedure, as the holes have to be certain widths apart and certain sizes in diameter! Luckily our custodian and Mr. Nuytten are helping us along in this process! Stay "tuned" to see more steps in the creation of the flutes as well as the final product!

Grade 1/2/3 Rhythm Review

For these first two weeks of school, grade 1/2/3 classes have been immersed in a variety of nursery rhymes and poetry! We have been reviewing the rhythms Ta (quarter note), Ti-Ti (2 eighth notes) and Shh (quarter rest), as well as concepts such as beat vs. rhythm, phrase length, same/different, and playing pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments! Next we are moving on to a melody review of So, Mi and La. Stay tuned! :)
